I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

- A powerful earthquake of 7.0 magnitude (USGS) on the Richter Scale affected Haiti on 12 January, at 16.53hrs local time (GMT 21.53hrs). The earthquake happened 17km south-west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti (18.45N, 72.45W).

- Initial reports suggest a high number of casualties and widespread damage, with an urgent need for Search and Rescue.

- A United Nations Disaster and Assessment Coordination Team (UNDAC) is being mobilized.

II. Situation Overview

On Tuesday 12 January, at approximately 16.53hrs local time, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale, and less than 10 km deep, was recorded off the coast of Haiti, and only 17 km from the capital, Port-au-Prince. Aftershocks have been felt measuring 5.9 and 5.5 respectively. More aftershocks are expected in the coming hours.

The capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, has been severely affected including critical city infrastructure components such as, electricity, water and phone services. Electricity is not available and communications are difficult. Initial reports indicate a large number of casualties and widespread damage.

At this stage there is very limited access because of debris and other obstacles on the roads. The airport of Port-au-Prince is reported to be closed. The Presidential Palace and Government buildings are reported to have been seriously damaged. According to preliminary reports, several UN and well as other national buildings have collapsed or have been damaged. Populations may also be affected in Carrefour and Jacmel.

United Nations agencies, as well as the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society are preparing the deployment of teams and humanitarian assistance, notably from their regional hub in Panama. USAID/OFDA is sending a response team in addition to 2 USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) heavy teams.

OCHA is mobilizing a United Nations Disaster and Assessment Coordination Team (UNDAC) and is deploying staff from its Regional Office in Panama.

There has been no immediate report of damage in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Tsunami alerts were lifted, including for Haiti.

III. Humanitarian Needs and Response

Evacuation of injured, medical supplies and expertise are needed. Also clean water may be urgently needed very soon.

IV. Funding

All humanitarian partners including donors and recipient agencies are encouraged to inform FTS of cash and in-kind contributions by sending an email to: fts@reliefweb.int.

Recent political instability has also deterred efforts to regulate the sex tourism industry. Before the 2006 military coup, End Child Prostitution And Trafficking (ECPAT) had been collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism on creating a National Plan of Action to address the issue of child sex tourism. The initiative was suspended shortly after the ouster of the Thaksin administration. Now, the global economic downturn has made the Ministry of Tourism reluctant to reinvigorate efforts and give the outside world any impression that Thailand is anything but the "Land of Smiles." Giorgio Berardi, Program Officer for Combating Child-Sex Tourism (CST).at ECPAT, says Southeast Asia continues to harbor a reputation as a destination for sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism. "We still need far better enactment and enforcement of effective extraterritorial legislation," says Berardi.

In one TV commercial, two men, one with dark skin, the other with light skin; stand on a balcony overlooking a neighborhood. The dark skin guy turns to his friend and says in Hindi, "I am unlucky because of my face." His light skin friend replies, "Not because of your face, because of the color of your face."

Suddenly the light skin guy throws his friend a cream. It's a whitening cream.

It is one of several television commercials aimed at men in Pakistan and India. In the end the darker skin actor is shown several shades lighter and he gets the girl he was after. Most of the ads end up that way.

The commercials are sending a not so subtle message to men in Asia. Get whiter skin and you'll get the girl and the job of your dreams or at the very least you'll be noticed.

Habib should know, he owns a chain of 140 salons located in India and across the world. "We Indian people, we Asian people are more darker so we want to look more fair."

Skin whiteners were once targeted only to women. Now the products are a hot commodity for men.

Many of the brands being advertised for men are well known around the world including Nivea and Garnier.

A marketing study found sales for skin whitening creams have jumped more than 100 percent in rural India and sales for male grooming products are increasing 20 percent annually.

Hindustan Unilever, one of the largest consumer products companies in India, noted in recent annual reports that "skin lightening continues to be a major area of emphasis" for its skin care division.

And Emami Ltd., the company which produces "Fair and Handsome," sent CNN an email saying: "Fair and Handsome is a market leader with almost 70 percent market share in India and doing extremely well in Gulf countries and the Middle East as well."

But in a country where most people have brown skin, the message being sent to men and women has some people outraged.

"Basically if you need a job you have to have white skin. If you want a good partner, a companion you need white skin and you always seem to get it once you've used the fairness cream. Basically I think it's completely racist and highly objectionable," says Brinda Karat.

Karat is a member of India's Parliament who has made formal complaints about the advertisements to Indian authorities. She says they ads are simply playing on a social stigma that already exists in India.

To get a good look at the pervasiveness of the stigma attached to dark skin in India all you have to do is look at the want ads for Brides and Grooms in the newspaper.

Arranged marriages are still commonplace in India and the advertisements for brides and grooms often list physical attributes of the person being sought. Many of the ads list "fair" as one of the wanted physical characteristics.

"I mean at a time when we're talking about talents and skills, and the need for the accessibility to that to develop our potential; what does it do to dark persons' self esteem? Karat says. "I think it should be stopped."

But the product makers say they are simply giving the public what it wants and a few Indian consumers we spoke with agreed.

Deepak Rajput said: "Everybody wants to look handsome and beautiful, why not me?"

Salon owner Jawed Habib says he will accommodate if that is what the customer wants but he doesn't push the skin whitening products.

"Why do you even think about it?" He says: "Let's accept the way we are."

In many countries you find street children who are trying to escape from harsh poverty from their homes. Who are street children?
The term Street children refers to children who live or work on the streets, these street children are deprived of family care and protection.
Look at Kibera the largest slum in Africa from sources on the web estimate like 80-100thousand street children in Nairobi.

All these children living in the streets are at a great risk of being abused and like I read somewhere that travellers usually increase their vulnerability knowingly or unknowingly.

So what can we do?
1)Think twice before buying anything from a street child and refraining from giving money to begging children or parents with children - why is this?
By giving them money it makes them stay on the street and this puts them at risk. If you really want to help do not give directly to these children instead find support services that help these street children have a better future.
For example now I live in Bangkok and sometime back I visited a shelter called Mercy center caring for street children, aids affected.

In a city like Nairobi you find many organisations that try to make a difference in this area. Think what is best for the child. Make a difference today.

Send Donation Thank-You Letters, Cards and Notes Quickly.

The most important thing about your donation thank-you letters is not what you say or how you say it but how quickly you say it.

According to Stephen Hitchcock in Open Immediately!, for many donors, a brief thank-you note pre-printed with just the amount and date of the gift can be more effective than long-winded thank-you letters that arrive long after the donor mailed you a gift.

Your gift acknowledgement notes and cards need to leave your office within 48 hours of receiving a donor’s gift. Never take longer than a week. You need to be prompt with your gratitude for a number of reasons.

1. Being prompt is being polite. We all like dealing with people who are thankful

2. Your donors need to be reminded that they made the right decision in sending you a gift. They have many choices about where they can send their charitable donations. You need to remind them that their donation to your organization was the right choice. The longer you take to send that message, the less likely donors are to feel a kinship with your mission (and give again).

3. One of the prime reasons that donors lapse (stop giving) is that they feel unappreciated. The easiest way to show your appreciation is to thank your donors quickly, appropriately and enthusiastically.

A word about thanking major donors

Donors who send you particularly large gifts in the mail deserve a phone call or a personal visit. Which usually causes a problem with promptness. These donors are usually flagged, taken out of the daily receipting and thank-you process, and placed in a to-do pile for later follow up by the executive director, director of advancement or the person who signed the fundraising letter that prompted the gift.

And that’s where the problem arises. Donors who are taken out of the regular thank-you system tend to be thanked in person, eventually, but much later than is ideal. I recommend that you follow the advice of Stanley Weinstein. In his book, Complete Guide to Fundraising Management, Stanley recommends including major donors in your usual gift acknowledgement process. Mail them the same thank-you letter, note or card that you send to everyone else. That way they are thanked promptly. Then follow up with a more personal thank you note (perhaps hand-written), a phone call or a personal visit.

Fundraising Letters: Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Ask Anyone For A Donation

I have a brother-in-law who farms and drives a 16-wheeler for a living. When I told him that I start each business day with a blank computer screen that I must fill with at least 1,000 words by noon, he almost fainted. He says he could never do it because he wouldn’t know where to start. But the same goes for me when it comes to pulling the engine out of a John Deere 6020 Series tractor.

My brother-in-law is correct, of course. You can’t write an effective fundraising letter unless you know where to start. The most important part of any direct mail fundraising appeal is what you do before you write a word of the package.

Poorly conceived appeals lead to poor results. Letters written in haste usually waste money and hinder donations.

The secret to attracting new donors, renewing support, raising funds, building relationships and retaining loyal donors with direct mail is to ask yourself the tough questions before you ask anyone for a donation. You need to know who you are writing to, why you are writing them, and what you want them to do.

Here are some tips for increasing your chances of success by answering the vital questions that leading fundraisers ask before writing a single line of copy.

1. Who are you writing to?

Most of your donors share a common trait. What is it? Are they all touched by heart disease in some way? Are they all veterans? Are they all former students of your university? Are they all theatre-goers?

Understanding your audience is the first step because who you mail to is the single most important determinant of your success. You can craft the most moving appeal letter of the decade but your campaign will flop if you mail it to the wrong people.

Here are some of the questions you should ask yourself to get a better understanding of your donors—and how to appeal to them in a relevant way that motivates them to give.

* What are they passionate about—what makes them furious?

* What is their affinity with your organization—strangers? Regular donors? Major donors? Former donors? Volunteers? Clients?

* What types of appeals (emergency, renewal, acquisition, year-end) generate the highest response and largest gifts with this audience?

2. Why are you writing?

That sounds like a dumb question, right? You are writing because you need money! That’s a given. But as someone has so well said, “Your donors do not give to you because you have a need. They give to you because you meet a need.”

This means you need to take your attention away from your financial need and turn it to your cause. What crisis, opportunity, current event, issue or need is causing you to appeal for funds today? Focus on that and not on your need for funds. Here are some other questions to ask at this stage:

* What is the goal of this appeal letter, exactly? Acquire new donors or members? Get your current supporters or members to renew their support or membership? Raise funds for a particular project? Recover lapsed donors or members?

* What will you do with the money raised? Put it in your general fund? Spend it on a designated project or program? Reduce your deficit? Buy some capital equipment? Donors want to know.

* Why do you think donors will respond now? Have they responded to similar appeals? Have they supported similar organizations?

3. What do you want your readers to do?

“We want them to mail a gift, the larger the better!” Not so fast. Are you writing to business peers, inviting them to join your organization as members? Or are you mailing to existing donors, asking them to renew their support by mailing you a gift? Or are you writing to major donors, inviting them to join your giving club (President’s Circle, for example)?

In each of these cases, the action you want your reader to take will be different. So make sure you know what action your readers must take before you start writing. Consider these other questions:

* What other actions do you want your readers to take? (Request information about planned giving? Sign and mail a petition to their member of parliament? Complete and return a survey? Refer a friend?)

* How much do you want them to give? What is the amount of money that you want to receive from each person who receives your letter?

* What is the minimum size of gift you need? What is the largest gift that you can reasonably expect?

How to Request Bulk Freebies and Multiple Samples for Special Events, Fundraising, and Organizations

Do you need to request products samples for an event you are organizing? Do you need to request bulk freebies for fundraising? Do you need to find sponsors for product donations?

Here are strategies to help you request freebies and samples from companies and sponsors. You should be aware that the offers posted on many free stuff sites are not suitable for bulk requests. These sites list free stuff offered by corporations that use free offers to promote their products and services. Generally, these companies limit their samples to one per person, family, or an organization.

The best way to request multiple samples is to approach national and local manufacturers, stores, or companies directly. Visit their web sites and search for contact information of their corporate giving departments, public relations, or customer services. Then, email, write, or call to request the samples. You should consider writing letters using your organizations’ letterheads. In your letters, be sure to explain what you would like to request, why you need them, how you are going to use them, and how you would recognize the companies for their generosity.

When you contact large, national companies, you may want to find out if the companies have formal corporate giving policies. Use a search engine and search for the corporate giving or donation policies. Keywords to try are the company’s name and “corporate giving” or the company’s name and “donation.” Then, determine if your events or your organizations correspond to the policies, and compose your letter, following the instructions listed in the policies.

You may have better response rates from local companies. Try contacting companies that have target markets of your event or your organization. For example, I helped to organize a youth artwork contest. I contacted local fast food companies and youth clothing companies for the contest prizes. I was able to get a large duffle bag, a sweatshirt, and several gift certificates from local businesses.

When you are successful in requesting the samples, be sure to write thank you letters, including photos and videos to show how the samples were used and how the companies received recognitions.

As many of my readers know I come from the slopes of Mt. Kenya. In my region we grow tea, coffee, pyrethrum and lot's of vegetables both for export and local markets. Since the area is very agricultural the area is overpopulated.

People are hard working and they never say they are stressed or tired they just keep on working. During coffee harvesting periods we even worked under the rains. I grew up working, saturdays were days to do washing and till the lands. Everyday after school we did homework before dark as no electricity, prepared dinner and went to bed early.

School went on for 3 semesters in a year and during holidays we helped our parents work and work.

We have a lot of vegetables and fruits, but because they grow and ripen at the same time there is overproduction so they fetch little and this is why most people are poor despite working like hell.

Now, I grew up, married and left this village and now I'm a nomad around the world. I love it though I have now lived in different countries and I'm experiencing different cultures and everyday is an eye opener for me.

Would someone be interested to help me organise a week long working groups of women to help them, teach them how to conserve fruits and vegetables during the periods when they have plenty. Help them also find market in other areas for these products? Would you be willing to help us with the expenses?

Minister of State for Overseas Development, Kitt, announces funding for mine clearance initiatives

Minister of State for Overseas Development, Michael Kitt T.D., today announced that Irish Aid will provide over €1.8 million for humanitarian mine clearance in Afghanistan, Angola and Somalia.

The funding will support the operations of the HALO Trust, a Non-Governmental Organisation which, for over twenty years, has been removing mines and explosive remnants of war in conflict-affected countries around the world. It is estimated that landmines and explosive remnants of war maim or kill up to 20,000 people each year.

Announcing the funding, Minister Kitt said:
“The extensive presence of mines and explosive remnants of war in Afghanistan, Angola and Somalia is a serious obstacle to rehabilitation and recovery. Mines have frequently been laid close to residential areas and on agricultural land, presenting a constant threat to local communities. The horrific injuries and deaths caused by mines provoke untold suffering and impede the consolidation of peace.

Irish Aid has supported the work of the HALO Trust since 2000. Since then, considerable progress has been achieved in protecting potential victims and returning land to safe, productive use. However, the challenge remains immense. The funding of over €1.8 million which I am announcing today will enable HALO to continue its operations in Afghanistan, Angola and Somalia, laying essential foundations for long-term social and economic development in those countries.”

Charities Donations Solve Problems

Who was it that said: "I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act. " You might be surprised to learn that it was Bill Gates

I'm sure that you will agree with this quotation from Bill Gates if you think about it a little. Charities have for a long time been using the tv and other media to tell us all about the problems that people face in the world today. They also give us indications of how we can improve the lives of people in need and of course they give us the means by which we can play a part in the aid process. Charities donations isn't always about money. You can give all kinds of things and make a difference. Warm clothes, tinned food, cars or spectacles are just a few of the things that cane be done. Of course you can also give your time if you have any. Why not take a look at all the things that you don't use any more but are too good to throw away. You could end up making a significant donation without it costing you any money.

Cash is of course a good thing to donate and if this is how you make your charities donations then please continue to do so. If you give cash then how do you make your donations? Do you give regularly or only after a disaster has occurred? If you are one of the many people that make regular charities donations then you probably have a good idea which charities are the most important to you, such as AIDS or homelessness. You are probably also aware of the tax benefits open to you too. Charities can often reclaim the tax that you have already paid on the value of your charities donation. The basic rate of tax in the UK is 22% and that can make a significant difference to the charity you are donating to. Make sure that you have filled in the appropriate forms to say that you are a taxpayer and allow the charity to reclaim the tax.

If, like me, you don't have a 'favourite' charity, it is a good idea to plan your budget for the year and then decide who to help. Charities like the Red Cross, Oxfam, Cafod, etc. are known worldwide and are often first at disaster scenes. Then there is the charities set up as 'one offs' to help rebuild communities after disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami. Searching the Internet will help find details of those. The support in charities donations for these last two areas means that the people who have lost everything can receive help to start again.

Maybe it's better to help closer to home with charity donations. It can be very satisfying and enjoyable to be involved with local fund raising for schools and churches etc. When my family was young I used to help raise money for our local school. I was donating my time, a little money and goods and we had a good time and made new friends by doing it. The children loved celebrating harvest festival by donating fresh vegetables and fruit and when the festival was all over the food would be given to a local charity for the homeless.

That was all a long time ago now and I leave the school fund raising to the younger parents. I still help people though but I do it differently. I have recently supported Cancer research because it is affecting my family. It seems to affect everyone's family doesn't it? I also like to support children's charities both local and international. Knowing that my charities donations are helping to make a better future gives me a lot of satisfaction.

Instead gun the engine
and speed into anything, wrecking the car.
Your Air Bag will save you.
If the person is in the back seat
they will get the worst of it .
As soon as the car crashes
bail out and run.
It is better than having them find your body
in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting
into your car in a parking lot,
or parking garage:
A.) Be aware:
look around you,
look into your car,
at the passenger side floor ,
and in the back seat
B.) If you are parked next to a big van,
enter your car from the passenger door.
Most serial killers attack their victims
by pulling them into their vans while the women
are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car
parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,
and the passenger side.. If a male is sitting alone
in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back
into the mall, or work, and get a
guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator
instead of the stairs.
(Stairwells are horrible places to be alone
and the perfect crime spot.
This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun
and you are not under his control,
ALWAYS RUN!
The predator will only hit you (a running target)
4 in 100 times; And even then,
it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.
RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying
to be sympathetic:

It may get you raped, or killed.
Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking,
well educated man, who ALWAYS played
on the sympathies of unsuspecting women.
He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often
asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle,
which is when he abducted

9. Another Safety Point:
Someone just told me that her friend heard
a crying baby on her porch the night before last,
and she called the police because it was late
and she thought it was weird. The police told her
'Whatever you do, DO NOT

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby
had crawled near a window, and she was worried
that it would crawl to the street and get run over.
The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way,
whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.'
He told her that they think a serial killer
has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax
women out of their homes thinking that someone
dropped off a baby He said they have not verified it,
but have had several calls by women saying that
they hear baby's cries outside their doors
when they're home alone at night.

Minister of State Kitt announces €20m in support for the work of Irish missionaries

Michael Kitt TD, Minister of State for Overseas Development, will tonight announce €20 million in funding for Irish Missionaries in 2008. The Irish Aid funding will support the important work of over 800 missionary personnel in over 60 developing countries.

Minister Kitt will make the announcement at an event at the new Irish Aid Volunteering and Information Centre on Dublin’s O’Connell Street. The event will mark the contribution of Irish missionaries to tackling poverty in some of the world’s poorest countries. Speaking at the event, the Minister will emphasise:

“Irish Aid values strongly our long standing partnership with Irish NGO's and missionaries, who enjoy such an excellent reputation both domestically and internationally. We recognise that without this partnership it would be impossible to reach the objectives of the Irish Aid programme.

As Ireland’s official development assistance has expanded, so too has the funding available to NGO's and missionaries. We have also significantly increased the funding for missionaries' development work from €16m in 2007 to €20 million in 2008. We are working with these organisations as they plan and adapt for the future in a changing development environment.”

The Irish Missionary and Resource Service (IMRS) was established in July 2004 by members of the Irish Missionary Union (IMU) the umbrella body for Catholic missionary organisations, lay and religious, in order to build a more strategic partnership, facilitate dialogue and strengthen the relationship between Government and the missionary development community. Since then, Irish Aid support for the IMRS has risen from €12m in 2005 to €20m this year.

Irish missionary organisations are actively engaged in the delivery of a wide range of development programmes and projects including:

About 60% of the population of Busukuma, a village in Uganda, suffers from malaria. The problem of the large occurrence of malaria in this village influences people's health, economic and social status and is a cause of many deaths. The community of Busukuma has been seeking support to reduce the level of malaria incidences in their village.

Malaria is the most serious parasitic disease in the world, which occurs in tropical regions. Each year 300-500 million people are infected and over a million people die as a result of this infection. Most of the malaria cases (about 90%) occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. Children under the age of 5 and pregnant women are most vulnerable to the disease, often leading to death.

Malaria is endemic in 95% of Uganda and is a very serious health problem that currently poses the most significant threat to the people's quality of life. Malaria is a parasite spread through the female anopheles mosquito, easily infecting people. The symptoms include fever, headaches, nausea and vomiting, body aches, chills and sweats, general malaise as well as more serious symptoms such as anemia, enlarged liver, seizures and coma, organ failure, and kidney failure to name but a few.

However, malaria is very preventable. Since anopheles mosquitoes tend to be out at night, most infections occur between 10 pm and 5 am. By sleeping under insecticide treated nets (ITNs), the risk of malaria infection or greatly reduced. In addition, increasing awareness and knowledge is a big factor in reducing the spread of malaria.

To address this situation, community members have organized a plan to address this situation. The community would like to introduce an awareness campaign. The following activities will be conducted:

a) Discuss the use of ITNs with local leaders
b) Conduct a door-to-door campaign to teach about malaria
c) Form a Malaria Club and work with local schools
d) Hold a Malaria Club competition twice a year
e) Supply and distribute malaria drugs
f) Provide water tank covers to the most vulnerable homes in the community
g) Supply ITN bed nets to the most vulnerable members of the community

All of these activities will be conducted with local community members and volunteers and through community-based organizations. Training will be provided to volunteers and we will work closely with health care workers in the area.

My young brothers are still schooling in primary schools and two completed secondary school education and three just staying at home having nothing to do. Our father was working but all his benefits were finished. I am the only one having acquired skills of driving and posses a malawi school certificate of education. I completed school three years ago but secured no job.
I have been approached by all these youngsters for assistance in one way or the other. I try as much as possible for them not to starve. My future which looked brighter during the presence of our parents is now deem.

Coinciddentary, I have been selected to Mikolongwe college, a vocational training college ,to pursue a course in Tropical Agriculture for one year but I have no funds at present. The whole amount of fees including examinations reaches approximately 100 U$D.I dont want to lose that rare opportunity because after completion I shall be able to work as a field facilitator among disadvantaged people as well.I would suggest if you fill that you can assist then you can pay direct to the school for the sake of transparency.

With full hope that you are going to assist me in one way or the other. I am a responsible person our church and I really believe in God and hence advise you to scan my application in detail if in doubt.

How you can help

The Hair Arts group is currently running a registered hair beauty school on voluntary and scholarship basis and has about 50 students taking certificate and diploma levels courses. However, the capacity of the school does not respond to the demand. The facilities and equipments of the school are limited and do not allow the center to sustain itself or to grow. According to the group, the standard of the curriculum is still low and they would benefit a lot from exchanging experiences and know-how with other schools, such as in Europe and America. In addition, there is a need for diversification of the training courses by including computer literacy.

With some external support the group hopes to turn their hair beauty project into a full institution offering training for all their young people in the area of hair and beauty therapy as well as other courses.
This would create training and job opportunity for many community members. The main target group consist of females desiring such a vocation in hair arts and beauty, but with special focus on the needy, the orphans and the widows in the context of H.I.V management.
However, to be sustainable in the long run, the institute also needs to formulate a business plan and define ways to generate revenues from the hair and beauty saloon. For this purpose the group seeks the help of the online Neighbours to provide them with ideas, know how and examples of successful vocational training institutes developed elsewhere and contribute towards defining the required steps, contacts and resources to get there.

Inputs needed/ What you can do to help
Equipments needed for the project (we need to raise 3,503 US Dollars for the equipments)
- Curricula and exchange know-how.
- Business plan for the institute, potentially including diversified courses.
- Ideas and suggestions for the building of their own institute.

Minister of State Michael Kitt announces over €7 million in funding

The Minister of State for Overseas Development, Mr Michael Kitt T.D., today announced funding of over €7 million to higher education institutions in Ireland for research into development issues.

This is the first round of funding announced under Irish Aid’s Programme of Strategic Cooperation with Higher Education and Research Institutes, which was launched last year. A further call for applications under the scheme will be made in September. Making the announcement Minister Kitt said:

“This funding will enable Irish universities and colleges to build partnerships with universities in developing countries. Together they will work to develop innovative ways to tackle global poverty and underdevelopment. For Irish universities, this is an opportunity to build their expertise in development research. I welcome the great interest they have shown in the field of development cooperation”.

“Our work in Irish Aid will be enriched by the research carried out under the Programme, which will help build Ireland’s academic and professional expertise in respect of development policy and practice.”

The successful proposals were recommended for funding by an International Appraisal Panel comprising experts in the field of development research. The Higher Education Authority will administer the Programme’s funding on behalf of Irish Aid.

The Programme of Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher Education and Research Institutes 2007-2011 was launched in December 2006, with a budget of €12.5 million.

Funding in this round has been awarded to the National University of Ireland Maynooth, Mary Immaculate College Limerick, University College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Centre for Cross Border Studies. Networking grants were awarded to Dublin City University and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The thematic areas that activities funded under the Programme will focus on include health, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, education, food and livelihood security, pro-poor economic growth, governance and gender equality.
